In Focus: Tony Mose

At a gallery show in New Orleans, Allyson Duckworth and artist Tony Mose were connected via a mutual friend, and quickly began a deep friendship. Tony and his wife, Tracy, remember meeting the “bubbly redhead” and feeling an instant connection. Allyson, too, remembers seeing Tony’s work for the first time; a jolt of inspiration. A symbiotic partnership was born.

Tony’s work spans a range of artistic disciplines. Landscapes, portraits, abstract, and sculpture all are featured at Esom Gallery on Magazine Street in New Orleans. Currently, Tony is working through his ‘Coronation’ series, which features portraits of abstracted subjects with Tony’s now-signature trinity crown atop their head. Visuals have always guided Tony’s mind, citing childhood books like Where the Wild Things Are as well as iconography from his Catholic faith as major sources of inspiration. Perhaps his greatest influence, though, is his wife and gallery director, Tracey Mose. Tracy’s physical beauty, namely her long, slender neck, is in each brushstroke. After 28 years together, Tony says making the palette is easy with Tracy as his inspiration, and, therefore, all of his paintings have a sense of happiness. As for plans to leave New Orleans? None. “Can you imagine selling apples on the moon?” he asks. Esom Gallery’s unique clientele and the city’s perpetual energy keep Tony and Tracey deeply rooted in New Orleans, as it, too, is in every brushstroke.
